May - June - July -August

Week 1: Space and Science

Students study the world around them as well as explore the universe. Students enjoy a mock space camp including out of this world snacks, art projects, fitness challenges and games!

Week 2: Safari and Exploration

Lions and tigers and bears "oh my"! Students take an imaginary trip to Africa and visit the Sahara Dessert. Learn about African animals and the culture of its people. Students enjoy writing to Pen Pals, animal face painting and snack making. African Dance, Drum Circle and Dress-up make this week a blast!

Week 3: Media Week

Lights, Camera, Action! Students study newspaper design, photography and movie production. They produce their own Whiteford newspaper, mini news report, movies, advertisements and daily announce- ments. Students learn about advertising jargon and gimmicks and how to exercise marketing skills. They also enjoy a DJ dance party and trip to the local pool for refreshing summer fun.

Week 4: Dinosaur Week

Dino-mite! The pre-historic Earth, Dinosaurs, fossils and carbon dating are just a few things we will learn about at the State Museum's Dinosaur exhibit. Students also enjoy decorating boiled "Dino" eggs for our Dino-mite egg hunt in our full sized gym.

Week 5: Marine and Ecology

Students study marine biomes and rain forest ecology through hands on activities, including a trip to Riverbanks Zoo. Students build and maintain a mini garden and learn about conservation and preservation of the world around them.

Week 6: Ancient History

Walk like an Egyptian! Students study ancient civilizations, customs andrituals. They make and dress in native costumes and enjoy native cuisine and music. Art projects and crafts make treasures to last a lifetime!

Week 7: Career Week

What do you want to be when you grow up? Students can find out just that during Career Week. Students learn the importance of school, how to dress for success, budgeting skills, including advice from guest speakers from local businesses. Students plan and execute an executive party. Lots of hands-on activities will get the entrepreneurial juices flowing!

Week 8: Music and Talent Week

Students learn different styles of music and dance as they prepare for the 4th Annual Whiteford Summer Camp Talent Show. Students enjoy making costume designs and choreographing their own dances. Parents are welcome to participate in the festivities during the talent show.

Week 9: Bug Week

Students study insects and their purposes. With a special trip through Lexington's Virginia Hilton Park, students can observe and collect insects in their environment. Students make their own bug jars and buggy snacks.

Week 10: Back to School Week!

Get kids excited about learning! Students learn how to study and use organizational skills as they prepare to head back to school. Students will enjoy a "Back to School Party" to start the year off refreshed and ready to learn. Special training will help kids "connect the dots" to subjects like math and science.
