First,
we teach self discipline and self control under God. We teach
our students to act responsibility, to do what they ought
and not what they want. Uncontrolled, free-sprit, do-what-you-want
behavior is contrary both to God’s Word and to healthy
living. It is inappropriate for any disciplined sport or artistic
endeavor. Rules and regulations do not restrict growth but
encourage confidence and skill development.
Our
students learn to defend themselves well. We teach that it
is always good to avoid a fight and not to allow anger to
cloud our focus and impair our safety (Matthew 5:25, Proverbs
15:1). They learn first to explore and exhaust peaceful means
to resolve conflict through negotiation and accommodation.
Physical defense is a last resort. (Proverbs 15:18).
Our
self defense techniques involve stances, kicks, blocks, punches
and combinations. Controlled sparring is allowed only with
the attainment of orange belt status and only when the student
has demonstrated maturity in employing controlled movements.
The instructor guides all grappling and sparring. Bowing to
teachers and to each other confers no religion meaning but
is rather a sign of respect for others Our studio is called
a room and is not refereed to as a dojo (house of worship).
We refer to our instructors by their first names, prefaced
by “Mr.” or “Ms.” Orange belt status
and above may address their instructor as Sensei, which means
teacher. We reserve the title “Master” for our
Lord alone.
Most
martial arts techniques originated in the Orient in a pagan
culture with philosophies different from our own. These philosophies
put a low value on individual human life and no recognition
of or reliance on the God of the Bible.
While our curriculum employs some of these ancient, scientifically
tested and proved leverage and physical techniques, and necessarily
use some of the oriental terms of their origin (Compare the
fact that most kitchen terms are French), we reject outright
the pagan philosophies and the dangerous meditation and altered
states of consciousness that accompany most martial arts training.
Our
philosophy is frankly based on the injunction of Scripture:
“Be bold, be strong, for the Lord your God is with you”
(Proverbs 14:16). Jesus taught defense of self and loved ones.
n Matthew 12:29 he asks: “…how can one enter into
a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he
first bind the strong man? And then he will spoil his house.”
Of course, one cannot do so, for “No man can enter into
a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he
will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his
house” (Mark 3:27).
The
Savior said: “When a strong man armed keepeth his palace,
his goods are in peace” (Luke 11:21). Whiteford School
of the Arts subscribes to the statement of faith of the South
Carolina and American Association of Christian Schools and
Colleges (refer to student handbook). We teach Martial Arts,
like every other artistic discipline, from a Biblical perspective.
