How
did Whiteford School of the Arts come to be?
When
the church moved to Whiteford in 1995, among the few items
brought from its former location were the little boy and
girl statues that stand just outside our Kindergarten entrance.
They seemed to capture the air of innocence and the potential
of youth. Some of the children actually hug and kiss them
when they enter the school in the mornings.
Unknown
to the church at the time, there were dark forces in the
community that neither loved nor respected churches or children.
At first, the church sign was vandalized and the letters
arranged to form obscenities. Then one night idle hands
and loveless hearts defaced other parts of the church—including
these little statues, the symbols of innocence, by scrawling
666 on their face.
As
part of his punishment, the young man charged with the deed
and other acts of vandalism in the community was brought
to the church to work until he had repaid the damage he
had done. In the weeks that followed, Pastor Wayne Wall
not only got to know the lad, but learned he had friends--all
bored, all from dysfunctional homes, with little home life,
pride or direction. The pastor wondered what would happen
if, instead of scrawling obscenities and defacing what others
had built, the young man could developed his own talent
and contribute beauty and love to the world instead of ugliness
and anger. After all, it takes as much effort to tear down
as to build up--the only difference is a matter of attitude
and inspiration.
While
discussing the need to clean up the statues with his daughter
Kathy, an artist, he mentioned this vision and asked if
she could start teaching an art class in connection with
the other programs. She showed surprise at the suggestion
and told him he was the second person to suggest such a
idea. She and a Sunday School teacher had put their children
to painting chairs for their new Sunday school rooms and
when the teacher saw the pride and satisfaction it brought
the children to create, and she too suggested that Kathy
start an art class! It was decided that day to start Whiteford
School of the Arts.
Originally,
only art and piano classes were planned, but as other teachers
became available, the curriculum was expanded until now
a wide variety of artistic disciplines are available.
